Our story

Our Story

Maboroshi means "whimsical dream" in Japanese, and that is exactly what it was for founders Tom and Rebecca Kisaichi. In 1991 they packed up and left for Burgundy with their young daughter. In the Côte d'Or, Tom knocked on doors until he landed work under Charles Rousseau at Domaine Armand Rousseau in Gevrey-Chambertin, while Rebecca studied viticulture.

Back in California, Tom worked his way up through the cellars, from Stonestreet to enologist at Michel-Schlumberger in Healdsburg, while Rebecca worked alongside top winemakers and viticulturists across Napa and Sonoma. In 1999 they planted their own estate vineyard in the Goldridge soils of southwestern Sebastopol and launched Maboroshi.

Today the estate is farmed organically and biodynamically and hand-tended to bring out the true character of the site — two people pursuing their passion for growing grapes and making great wine, remaining true to themselves and to the expression of the land.
