Sebastopol & Santa Rosa · a worker-run cooperative

Food for people, not for profit.

Fifty years ago a handful of workers built a grocery store the way they thought one should be built — owned by the people behind the counter, stocked for the neighborhood it stood in. That store is still here, in two Sonoma County towns, still run the same way.

Inside the store

More than a grocery run.

One roof, a few good counters. Everything here is chosen by someone who works the floor.

01

The Deli

Fresh, made-in-house plates, sides and grab-and-go — the kind of lunch you actually want to eat twice.

02

The Garden Taproom & Cafe

Beer and wine on tap alongside cafe food, in a room built to sit down and stay a while.

03

The Butcher Shop

A real counter with a real butcher — cuts, questions answered, nothing shrink-wrapped and forgotten.

04

Produce & Grocery

Wellness, household essentials and a produce wall stocked the way a neighbor would stock it — not a warehouse.

Built by workers, for the people

Fifty years of a store that answers to its neighborhood.

Community Market opened in 1975 as a worker-run cooperative, and it never stopped being one. The people who ring you up, stock the shelves and cut the meat are the same people who own and run the place. There's no owner far away deciding what's best for a quarter — just a store that's stayed accountable to the folks who shop it and the folks who staff it.

"Food for people, not for profit." — the co-op's guiding line, since day one
  • Worker-run The people who run the store own the store. Decisions are made by the folks behind the counter.
  • Values-led Fifty years of putting people over profit — that isn't a slogan we bought, it's how we started in 1975.
  • Two neighborhoods Sebastopol and Santa Rosa. Same co-op, same standards, two front doors close to home.
